"In the beginning there was a word; and the word was God. All else was darkness and void without form. So God created the Heavens and Earth. He created the Sun and the moon and the stars, so that light may pierce the darkness. The Earth, God divided between the land and the sea and He filled it with many assorted creatures."

The dark, salty, slimy creatures that inhabited the seashore He called Royal Marines and He dressed them accordingly. The flighty creatures of the air He called Airy Fairies, and these he clothed in uniforms which were ruffled and foul. These creatures were not over popular, as their droppings fell on the earth below, but God forgave them because as He said, they knoweth not what they do.

The lowest creatures of the sea, God called Skimmers, and with a twinkle in His eye, and a sense of humor only He could have, God gave them big gray steel targets to go to sea on. He also gave them very many splendid uniforms to wear. He gave them wonderful and exotic places to visit. He gave them pen and paper so that they might write home every week, and he gave them ‘make and mends’ at sea! He also gave them a ‘chinky’ laundry that they might keep their splendid uniforms clean. (When you are God you tend to get carried away at times).

On the seventh day as we know God rested, and on the eighth day at 0700Z God looked down upon the Earth and God was not a ‘happy God’. He realized something vital was missing. So he thought about His labors and with His infinite wisdom, God decided to create a divine creature, and this divine creature He called a ‘Submariner’. And these Submariners, whom God created in His own likeness, were to be of the Deep, and so he gave them a white woolly jumper to keep them warm. He gave them sleek, black, steel messengers of death to roam the depths of the oceans, waging war against the forces of Satan and evil. He gave them hotels to welcome them when they grew weary of doing Gods will. He gave them subsistence so that they may entertain the ladies on nights ashore and impress the hell out of the poor creatures called Skimmers.

At the end of the eighth day, God looked down upon the Earth and saw that all was well. But still God was not happy, because, in the course of His labors, He had forgotten one thing, He had not given Himself a Submariners white woolly jumper!! He thought long and hard, and finally satisfied his mind that not just anybody can be a Submariner.

Symbol of courage forged by pride
Recalling times when brave men died.
Token of faith in a future world,
Ever at hand when our flags unfurl'd.

Untarnished by trial, tradition born
An emblem of valor, honorably worn.
Sought by many...earned by few.

USS Benjamin Franklin SSBN640: I reported to the "Gold" crew, aboard the USS Benjamin Franklin, 9/66. What a magnificent lady she was. She was elite in all aspects. Our home base was on Ford Island, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The routine of a FBM (Fleet Ballistic Missile) submarine crew was 3 months in port, training, and then 3 months out. There were 2 crews, the 'Gold' and the 'Blue' crews. When it was the'Gold' crews time, we would fly to Guam and arrive just as the 'Blue' crew was returning from their patrol. Both crews would then spend about 3 days for change of command. The 'Blue' crew would then return to Pearl Harbor. The 'Gold' crew would then conduct system checks, load and get the boat ship shape for our patrol. We always looked forward to the day when we would finally leave port and silently slip into the depths of the pacific. It was then, on our extended patrol, that we became a part of our nations strategic deterrent force.

The Lady of the Lake: This picture hung in the Chiefs Quarters, on the USS Benjamin Franklin, during 5 patrols that I made on her from 9/67 to 3/69.
USS Bashaw AGSS241:: I reported to the USS Bashaw in 3/69. She was in the process of being outfitted to make a 9 month west pac cruise. We left San Diego, Ca. 7/69 and made it as far as Pearl Harbor when President Nixon started his military cut backs. We were, at that time, one of the oldest boats left in the fleet and were ordered to Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Vallejo, Ca. where she was decommissioned, salvaged, and later laid to rest at the bottom of the Pacific.

Lord God, our power ever more, whose are
 doth reach the ocean floor
Divine with men beneath the sea; traverse
the depths protectively.
Hear us when we pray, and keep them safe
from peril in the deep.
Lord, guard and guide the men who man the
submarines that guard our land.
Be with them always, night and day, in quiet
depths and roaring spray.
O hear us when we cry to Thee, for those in
peril on the sea.

I Want You!!

In all of it's power and glory - tactical weapons and weapons of mass destruction, precise navigation and sophisticated communications, absolute stealth and long range sonar, nuclear propulsion to steam submerged many times around the world; ability to deter an enemy, defend a people or destroy a nation; respected by all, feared by most, and loved only by the men called submariners - the submarine is but a mass of steel, electronics and weaponry.
It's the sweat of the men in her that's the lifeblood flowing through the veins of the beast. It's their courage that matches the violence of the seas. It's their dedication and ingenuity that provide the margin of victory over the enemy. It's their service that assures the peace for a free nation. And it's their personal sacrifice that is shared only by their families.
These are the men who live in the belly of the beast. They are the crew. They are the heart that beats in the shark of steel.

 Submariners Creed
"To perpetuate the memory of our shipmates who gave their lives in
pursuit of their duties while serving their country. That their dedication,
deeds and supreme sacrifice be a constant source of motivation toward
greater accomplishments. Pledge loyalty and patriotism to the United
States government."

To all the Heros who have served
our country and those defending
her now.

God Bless America
